V8 Transmission Lockup After SOTA Update
Land Rover's OTA software update 4.3.4 caused a gearbox malfunction on 2024–2025 Defender V8 models (primarily P500), locking the transmission in 2nd gear. JLR acknowledged the issue and released patch 4.3.4T, followed by version 4.4.0, which resolved the fault. P525 and Octa V8 variants appear unaffected.
What happened
In late 2025, Land Rover pushed an over-the-air software update (SOTA version 4.3.4) to Defender V8 models. Shortly after installing the update, owners began reporting a "Gearbox fault detected" warning followed by the transmission locking into 2nd gear. The vehicle could not shift out of 2nd gear, sport mode was disabled, and in some cases the vehicle was completely immobilized and had to be flatbed towed to a dealer.
The issue appeared on the first drive after the update, sometimes within a few miles.
Which vehicles were affected
The transmission lockup primarily affected:
- 2024–2025 Defender V8 P500 (BMW-sourced 4.4L twin-turbo V8) — most widely reported
- 2024–2025 Defender V8 P525 (AJ133 5.0L supercharged V8) — anecdotal reports suggest this variant was largely unaffected, though not officially confirmed
Community reports indicate the Octa has not experienced this issue. Older model year V8s (2022–2023) that received the same update appear to have been unaffected, suggesting the fault was specific to the newer P500 engine/transmission calibration.
Non-V8 powertrains (P300, P400, D200, D250, D300, P300e) were not affected.
JLR's response
JLR acknowledged the issue and directed affected owners to bring vehicles to a retailer for a Technical Assistance (TA) case. The response followed a clear timeline:
- Update 4.3.4 pushed over the air — introduced the gearbox fault
- JLR acknowledged the issue through field engineering channels and Land Rover Technical Support (LTS)
- Patch 4.3.4T released — a targeted transmission calibration fix. Owners who logged out and back into the Pivi system found 4.3.4T available as a follow-up update. Installing 4.3.4T resolved the gearbox fault for most owners
- Version 4.4.0 released — a full software update that includes the transmission fix. Confirmed working by JLR field engineering and community reports
Some dealers also resolved the issue by rolling back to version 4.3.3 before the targeted patches were available.
Dealer responses were inconsistent. Some dealers applied the OTA patch (4.3.4T) remotely or in-shop within days. Others told owners that JLR would not fix the issue via OTA and required an in-dealer reflash. At least one owner reported waiting over a weekend because the fix required coordination with JLR UK, who were not available until Monday.
The fix
This issue is now resolved. If you have a V8 Defender and have not yet updated past 4.3.4:
- If you are on version 4.3.3 or earlier: The update path is now safe. Version 4.4.0 includes the fix. You can update normally
- If you are stuck on 4.3.4 with the gearbox fault: Log out of your Pivi Pro account and log back in. Check for update 4.3.4T or 4.4.0. If neither appears, contact your dealer for a Technical Assistance case
- If you already installed 4.3.4T or 4.4.0: No further action needed. Community reports confirm both versions resolve the issue
What this reveals about SOTA updates
This incident highlights a broader concern with Land Rover's over-the-air update process. The 4.3.4 update was pushed to vehicles without adequate testing on the P500 powertrain calibration, resulting in a safety-affecting fault that locked transmissions while vehicles were in use.
Unlike a recall that brings vehicles to a controlled dealer environment, OTA updates are installed by owners in their driveways — and the consequences of a bad update are immediate and potentially dangerous. A transmission locked in 2nd gear on a highway is not just an inconvenience.
Land Rover does not currently offer an option to defer or decline SOTA updates, though owners can disable automatic installation by adjusting Pivi Pro settings. There is no rollback option available to owners without dealer intervention.
Editor's Note
This issue is marked as resolved because the fix (4.3.4T and 4.4.0) is available and confirmed working. But it should not have happened. An OTA update that bricks gearboxes on a $100K+ vehicle is a failure of the validation process, not just a software bug.
The silver lining: JLR's response was relatively fast — the targeted patch appeared within days, and 4.4.0 followed shortly after. The community's rapid data sharing on Reddit accelerated diagnosis and helped owners find workarounds (logging out/in to trigger the patch) before dealer appointments were available.
If you are a V8 owner who experienced this issue and had to pay for towing or dealer time, document your expenses. JLR covered the repair under Technical Assistance cases — ensure your dealer has opened one and that you are not being charged for a fault caused by their software.
